Independence Day Potluck Party!

Plans are in the making for a fun 4th of July POTLUCK & BBQ for American families in Palau! Details are still in the works so check back here for more information, but put it on your calendars now and kindly pass the word! The 4th of July is a Saturday.

Sea Passion Hotel, which was gracious enough to host the founding meeting of the American Assocation of Palau, is once again being very generous in extending use of their facilities to the Association for the upcoming 4th of July celebration. Sea Passion's facilities include a swimming pool, small beach area, BBQ areas, and a beach bar. It's a great place for adults and children, so plan on bringing the family!

As noted, once the details are completed shortly information will be posted here.

We're looking for entertainment! Are there any "musicians" or "entertainers" among us who'd be willing to perform for the "crowd"? If you're up for it, drop a note to usapalau@gmail.com and we'll work out the details. Don't be shy now, break out those guitars, keyboards and drums.

Hope to see you there!

The Founding of the American Association of Palau

On Wednesday May 13, 2009, an informal meeting of American citizens residing in Palau took place at the soon to be opened Sea Passion Hotel (http://www.palauseapassion.com/).
Approximately 25 members of the American ex-patriot community in Palau met at the very nice waterfront bar at Sea Passion Hotel and following some brief socializing, sat down to discuss the idea of forming the American Association of Palau.

While a great effort was made to notify all U.S. citizens residing in Palau, apologies go out to those who were undoubtedly missed. Many others who were contacted but could not attend given the short notice nonetheless expressed their interest in such an association and requested to be kept informed of the outcome.

The idea of an American Association has been tossed around for several years by long-time members of the American community in Palau however, no association has been formed to date. Recently the idea surfaced again and with enough apparent momentum to warrant moving forward which brought about the meeting on the 13th.

U.S. Charge d'Affaires Mr. Mark Bezner, addressed the group providing an overview of the special nature of the relationship between the United States and Palau and the COMPACT OF FREE ASSOCIATION which is the document that outlines the nature of cooperation between both nations. The Charge updated attendees on the status of the Compact which is presently undergoing its' 15 year programmed review by both countries, as called for in the agreement.

Following the Charge's remarks the floor was opened for questions and answers before general discussion ensued regarding formation of an association of U.S. citizens residing in Palau. Attendees participated in a lively and informative discussion before a show of hands was called for on the proposal to form an association. By show of hands the decision to form an association was unanimously adopted and so shall come about the American Association of Palau.

There was clear consensus among participants that the purpose of an association was to bring the American community in Palau closer together and to work with one another and within the Palauan community in a positive and constructive manner to serve the needs of Americans in Palau.

Following the meeting, work began immediately to create framework for the American Association of Palau and to set the next meeting at the which the association may be formally launched with full participation of the American community in Palau. Standby for more details.
